For patients with breathing disorders, the fear of being short of breath can be overwhelming.  This fear can influence decisions about which activities will be pursued and which will be avoided.  Unfortunately, these decisions often lead to poor physical conditioning and disability.  This cycle of disability is very difficult to break.  Your decision and commitment to develop a healthier and more active lifestyle is the first step to an improved quality of life.

University of Utah Health Care’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program helps patients suffering from pulmonary disorders manage their conditions and improve their quality of life. Our program takes a collaborative team approach, with specialists in the area of medicine, exercise physiology, nursing, and respiratory therapy, working together to develop individualized treatment plans to help patients achieve their goals.

There are a number of techniques that can help you improve your physical and emotional well-being.  While physical reconditioning is a vital component of the program, self-management skills  are also presented to assist you with energy conservation, better breathing methods, use of medications, pacing, establishing a home exercise program, and relaxation techniques.  Together these elements are intended to improve your physical and emotional well-being.
