HomeServicesInterventional RadiologyWhat to Expect

What should I expect before and during an exam?

Most patients will need to abstain from eating or drinking for eight hours prior to their exam.  Upon arrival at University Hospital or Huntsman Cancer Hospital patients will check in at the admitting desk (clinic 1 for University Hospital).  Patients are asked to arrive one to two hours prior to the scheduled start time of their procedure.

Patients will change into a hospital gown and be shown to a private room where they will speak with a doctor and nurse.  The doctor and nurse will explain the procedure and review any necessary paperwork.  At this time, patients are encouraged to ask any questions they might have.  The doctor and nurse will inform the patient of the expected length of their procedure.  The type of procedure and the length of the procedure will depend on the diagnosis.

Many procedures involve conscious sedation for patient comfort.  Most procedures require an additional recovery time of two to six hours in a short stay unit.  Patients may be admitted to the hospital after their procedure upon a doctor’s recommendation.
