WHAT IS MRI?

MRI is an abbreviation for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.  MRI does not use ionizing radiation it uses radio frequencies waves in a strong magnetic field to obtain images.

Each MRI exam that we do we use coils.
Coils are antennas used during MRI to obtain the detailed images.  The coils are placed in the area of interest.   They come in many shapes and sizes.

The University of Utah has four MRI scanners.  We have a large bore espree scanner which accommodates patients weighing up to 440 lbs.
