Independent Living Skills

Overview

Independent Living Skills (ILS) is a four-week rotation of short but informative classes aimed at patients who have suffered a spinal cord injury and their families. Each patient is provided with their own manual which teaches patients tips on how to deal with impairments. Other printed materials, films, demonstrations and hands on experiences are also used to give patients ideas for overcoming activity limitations.

The daily classes cover a variety of topics including

  • explaining the injury level and level of function
  • skin care
  • bowel and bladder management
  • sexuality
  • social considerations
  • and ongoing medical care issues

Location

All classes are held in 2R110 (formerly room 262), the Rehab Education Room, located just west of the Rehab Elevators on the second floor (SOM).
