Program Scope
Program Scope
The Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP) at the University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics provides physician, nursing, therapy and community resource services that meet the unique needs of adults and adolescents. Persons are admitted with a wide range of conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury/dysfunction, traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, amputation, multiple trauma, musculoskeletal injuries, neurological disorders, and any other condition that may significantly limit physical and cognitive functioning including ventilator dependence. Though the inpatient setting is the central point for the therapy program, a full continuum of services is provided at the University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics which includes emergency care and acute medical services prior to CIIRP admission, and outpatient, home and community services post discharge.
Prior to Admission
Prior to admission to the inpatient program, patients must be medically stable, require 24 hour rehabilitation nursing and be capable of actively participating in a minimum of three hours of therapy per day in the rehab treatment plan. Readiness for the CIIRP is indicated by the potential to be discharged to a home-like environment. Patients may also be considered if they demonstrate the potential to increase their level of independence within the facility in which they reside. Psychological and behavioral functioning is also considered carefully prior to admission. To fully benefit, a person must be able to be compliant with the rehab treatment plan.
Individualized Treatment Plans
Individualized rehab treatment plans identify functional activity limitations such as walking, eating, dressing, toileting and communicating. Functional limitations are addressed through individual and group treatment. Participation restrictions such as driving, weight-bearing, etc. are also addressed in the treatment program through community reintegration activities and patient/family education classes. Neurological Education Classes focus on the skills and knowledge required during recovery from a brain injury or stroke. Independent Living Skills Classes provide resources and support for those recovering from spinal cord injury or dysfunction.
The CIIRP accomplishes preserving cultural diversity through careful attention to individual assessment, interpreters, clergy and appropriate family and community support systems.
The Focus
Even prior to a patient's admission to the CIIRP, the focus is on discharge resources and functional independence. Transition to home is critical. Outpatient therapy may provide continued monitoring of progress. The home and community based program may provide a continued interdisciplinary rehabilitation program to ensure functional success at home, work or school. Community referral and resources are provided for the wide range of needs encountered. The TRAILS Program is provided to promote ongoing recreational participation after a life changing event. The ultimate goal of the Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is the most functional level of independence possible and the return of quality of life for persons served.
