Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology is a specialty area within the broader field of clinical psychology that focuses on brain-behavior relationships. Clinical neuropsychologists examine presenting with a variety of conditions with the goal of describing their cognitive and emotional functioning with the aim of diagnostic clarification, rehabilitation recommendations, other treatment planning, and/or return to work or school decisions.

Neuropsychological Evaluation

Neuropsychological evaluation involves a clinical interview and administration of objective assessment instruments. The assessment tools used by neuropsychologists cover a range of cognitive abilities (i.e., thinking skills like attention, memory, and problem-solving ability) as well as emotional functioning and personality characteristics. Data derived from the interview and assessment process are integrated with relevant information from the medical history. The end product is a report synthesizing these different information sources and providing recommendations that may help with further rehabilitation, treatment, and clinical decision making. The final part of the evaluation process involves meeting with individuals, family members, and, on occasion, case managers to provide feedback on the evaluation results and answer any questions that may arise.

Relevant clinical conditions and patient populations

Neuropsychological evaluation is an important component of the assessment and treatment of a variety of neurologic, psychiatric, and general medical conditions. In the rehabilitation setting, common presenting conditions include concussion, traumatic brain injury, stroke, aneurysm, progressive neurologic conditions (e.g., multiple sclerosis), brain neoplasm, and differentiating neurologic and psychiatric conditions among other conditions.
