Neuropsychology is a specialty area in clinical psychology that focuses on brain-behavior relationships. Clinical neuropsychologists examine a variety of conditions to help them diagnose these conditions, recommend rehabilitation techniques, and plan other treatment and/or decisions about the return to work or school.
Your doctor may recommend a neuropsychological evaluation. This evaluation is a clinical interview and assessment. In this interview your neuropsychologist will use tools to help determine a patient’s abilities, like the following:
- Thinking skills like attention, memory, and problem-solving ability
- Emotional functioning
- Personality characteristics
Data from this interview and assessment help your specialist make recommendations to help with rehabilitation, treatment, and decisions about your recovery process. In the final part of the evaluation your doctor will meet with individuals, family members, and (sometimes) case managers to customize a treatment plan for you.
Conditions That May Be Evaluated by a Neuropsychologist
- Brain neoplasm
- Differentiating neurologic and psychiatric conditions
- Progressive neurologic conditions (such as multiple sclerosis)
- Traumatic brain injury
