The University of Utah Hospital is the only hospital in the state of Utah and one of 1 of 10 facilities in the United States that has specialty accreditations from both JCAHO for Stroke Specialty accreditation and from CARF for Stroke Specialty Programs in Rehabilitation. Our Stroke Specialty Programs accreditation includes 3 program accreditations: Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs, Brain Injury Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs and Home- and Community -Based Rehabilitation Programs. These accreditations can ensure you, our patients and families that the care you receive through the Rehabilitation Center is amongst the best in the nation.
Rehabilitation Center at University of Utah Health Care offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary program for persons who have experienced a stroke (brain attack).
Our goal is to provide an individualized rehabilitation plan for stroke patients and their families. We help them set and reach physical, cognitive and emotional goals to enable the patient to return to the community at their highest level of physical, social and emotional well-being.
Depending on the area of the brain the stroke affects, a person may experience physical and cognitive impairments which may lead to functional limitations. These limitations may include paralysis on one side of the body, difficulties with walking, balance, speech and language, swallowing and coordinating their movements. In addition, they may be unable to understand what is happening around them and what is said to them. They may not recognize common objects or know what to do with them. The process of rehabilitation aims to maximize a person's functional independence, leading to a better quality of life.
