Stroke Rehabilitation

A Stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain burst or a blood clot blocks the blood vessel. Strokes can occur on either the left or the right side of the brain and, as a result they affect people differently. Stroke survivors may experience problems with walking, balance, coordinating their movements, vision changes, speaking, understanding and swallowing. They may not recognize common objects or know what to do with them.

The University of Utah Rehabilitation Center is the only Center in the state of Utah that has specialty accreditations from The Joint Commision for Stroke Specialty and from CARF for Stroke Specialty Programs in Rehabilitation. These accreditations ensure that the care you receive through the Rehabilitation Center is among the best in the nation. With a personalized rehabilitation treatment plan, our goal is to have the patient set and reach physical, mental and emotional goals. This enables the patient to return to the community at their highest level of physical, social and emotional well-being.

The comprehensive stroke care available at University Health Care has two main components:

  • The Stroke Center - Accredited by the Joint Commission as a certified Primary Stroke Center and a recipient of the American Stroke Association's Gold Performance Award. This Center has been a driving force in developing Utah's premier emergency and acute services, provider education and prevention programs.  Learn more
  • The Rehabilitation Center - The Center offers both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation with a focus on advanced neurological therapeutic treatment. Our neurological education program provides you and your family with information about all aspects of your stroke and the resources available to you when you leave the hospital. The involvement of our healthcare professionals in ongoing research puts the Rehabilitation Center in the forefront of the most effective quality treatment programs in the nation.
