What is Insomnia?

If you experience difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or enjoying a restful sleep, you might be suffering from Insomnia.

Insomnia is defined as the perception of inadequate or poor quality sleep due to one or more of the following:

  • Difficulty falling asleep

  • Waking up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep

  • Waking up too early in the morning

  • Non-refreshing sleep and daytime fatigue

Insomnia can be classified as:

  • Transient (short term)- symptoms lasting from a single night to a few weeks

  • Intermittent- episodes occur from time to time

  • Chronic- occurs most nights and lasts for a month or more

There are many different factors that contribute to Insomnia. These include:

  • Stress

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Physical illness

  • Irregular schedules

  • Caffeine consumption

  • Circadian rhythm disorders

  • Drugs

  • Pain

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
