Rebranding for FTP Effective September 10, 2007
New FTP Alias: ftp.healthcare.utah.edu (*Browser Note)
The WRC FTP Service now has a new alias to reflect the rebranding initiative from uuhsc to healthcare domains. The FTP Service can now be reached at ftp.healthcare.utah.edu, which will be the new address given to all new users. The old address of ftp.uuhsc.utah.edu will also still work.
Browser Note: Depending on your browser, clicking on the ftp address links above may display a "The page cannot be displayed" error. Clicking on the "Go" or "Refresh" button in your browser should fix this.
Changes to FTP Access Effective March 19, 2007
If you use the ftp.uuhsc.utah.edu service to update websites and either work from home or from outside the hospital network please continue reading.
If you use FTP from inside the network, you will not be affected and no action is required.
For e-mail communications about this change, please select one of the links below:
E-mail message to all FTP users
E-mail message to external FTP users
To find out if you will be affected by this change, try to view the Intranet. If you cannot access the Intranet without using the VPN or Applications Portal, then you will be affected by this FTP change.
As of March 19th, FTP access from outside the main network to ftp.uuhsc.utah.edu will be blocked by the network firewall. This change is being made to comply with HIPAA regulations. This change means after March 19th you will no longer be able to use FTP from outside the main hospital network without making a security change. We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure you can use this service without interruption.
Those affected by this change have three options to continue using the FTP service without interruption:
- Use the VPN: The VPN (Virtual Private Network) may be a challenge to setup on your own, without Help Desk assistance, but it is simple to use, free, and provides a secure connection to network services for those outside the University Health Care network. For information and assistance about installing and using the VPN, please call the ITS Help Desk at 587-6000.
- Work only from within the network: If this is an option for you, it will avoid the need to make any configuration changes to your systems or applications at this time.
- Use Secure FTP: Many current HTML Editors and FTP tools have secure FTP capability. However, Homesite does not use secure FTP. We recommend using Dreamweaver. To setup DreamWeaver secure connections, see the instructions below.
- You are free to employ any FTP tool that supports secure FTP or use the VPN described above to connect to FTP from outside the network. To view a partial list of Secure FTP tools, visit the Wikipedia site on that topic. Our FTP server supports the Secure options "SSH file transfer protocol" and "FTPS (FTP over SSL)" shown in Wikipedia.
If you or your department would like to purchase Dreamweaver, you can obtain it at a discounted price from the Office of Software Licensing.
Thank you for helping ensure a more secure network environment.
Setting up Secure FTP in DreamWeaver 8
If you choose to use DreamWeaver, after installing DreamWeaver, please refer to the screenshots below to learn how to set up secure FTP. If you are using a different tool for secure FTP, please see the tool's vendor documentation about setting up secure FTP.
DreamWeaver Secure FTP Setup Instructions
There are several ways to create a new FTP Server Connection in DreamWeaver but they all get to the same place. The quickest method is the following:
In DreamWeaver, from the Files section navigation window, on the left, where folders and files are displayed, right-click on "FTP & RDS Servers" and select "Add FTP Server."
You can also use the "Manage Sites" link but there are more steps involved.

To have Dreamweaver connect securely, either when creating a new FTP Server Connection or by right-clicking on an existing connection entry:
- Ensure the hostname, username, and password entries are complete and accurate
- Click the "Use Secure FTP (SFTP)" checkbox
- Click the "Test" button to see if the Server Connection is successful
- If not successful, review the above steps or call the Web Team (587-6006) to help review/confirm password
- If successful, click "OK" to save the connection settings and to connect securely
Your connection information should follow this outline:
Name: "Whatever you want to name this connection"
FTP Host: ftp.uuhsc.utah.edu
Login: Typically your uNID (uXXXXXXX) or PeopleSoft ID (0XXXXXXX)
Password: Please see your Account Setup e-mail from HSCWebmaster
FTP Change Information from 2005
To better serve our growing user community and in preparation for enhancement in our web services structure, we at the Web Resource Center are centralizing all of your WRC FTP accounts into a single user account. If you currently have an FTP account/s to the development, test or production domains, you will now have only one FTP account. This account will grant you access to a single FTP server which has three different storage areas: dev, test and stage. These storage areas will contain the content of your development, test and production sites.
Important Note:
If you do not use your FTP account for web site development, your account will not be affected by these changes. Out of 315 accounts, there are only 15 accounts that fall into this category.
When will this be effective?
The FTP account consolidation will occur Monday, March 28, 2005. We want to give you plenty of time to understand these beneficial changes and know that there will be support available for any questions and troubleshooting concerns you may have. In connection with the above date, your FTP connection will be unavailable after 5 P.M., Friday, March 25, 2005 until 8 A.M., March 28, 2005, in preparation for these changes. A reminder will be sent out the week of March 21, 2005.
Change in Sign-In
Before you can log in, you must change the host name in the, "Configure FTP Server", or sign-in screen. The host name: wrctest.med.utah.edu, will need to be replaced with the new host name of: ftp.uuhsc.utah.edu. See NOTE box.
Once Connected
After you have connected to the server, you will see three folders: dev, test and stage. Each folder represents a storage area on the server that is appropriate for each stage of your web projects.
NOTE: The illustration below was taken from Homesite. If you are using other FTP tools or different web editors, this illustration may not be the same.
Folders that you see after you connect:
dev
dev replaces your development areas on wrcdev.med.utah.edu If you have never used development site before, it will be empty and you need not be concerned. If you have previously used a development site, your development folders will appear within this folder.
test
test replaces your test areas on wrctest.med.utah.edu If you have never used a test site before, it will be empty and you need not be concerned. The test folder will serve the same purpose as it has in the past. The majority of your work should be done in this folder and then moved to stage.
stage
This folder is new in name but is equivalent to what you know as production. Do not put anything in this folder you don't want to be seen on the World Wide Web! This is for completed web projects/updates only.
Browsing content
There will be changes in the URLs you will use to browse your web content in the dev and test domains. Currently, the URLs of wrctest.med.utah.edu and wrcdev.med.utah.edu are used to browse content. These URLs will be replaced with dev.(production domain name) and test.(production domain name.) For example, if the URL of your production site is www.nurs.utah.edu, then the test site will be test.nurs.utah.edu, and the development site will be dev.nurs.utah.edu.
Note:
www. is dropped in dev and test sites if it exists in production.
Questions
We believe these changes will be highly beneficial to our users and will simplify the current FTP process. If you have any questions or concerns during this implementation, you may contact the WRC at HSC Webmaster or by calling 587-6006.
