Edward R. Ashwood, M.D. has mentored over 100 University of Utah pathology residents and fellows. The pathology residents have twice honored him with the Outstanding Teaching Award in Clinical Pathology. In the 1990s, he served as residency program director for seven years.
Dr. Ashwood has received 11 AACC outstanding speaker awards. He is a past president of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists (ACLPS) and received the Young Investigator Award in 1982 and the ACLPS Evans Award in 1998. In 2010, Dr. Ashwood received the AACC award for Outstanding Contributions to Pediatric Clinical Chemistry, Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Division. In 2011, AACC honored him with the Outstanding Contributions in Education award. During the past 25 years, he has assisted Dr. Carl Burtis in editing seven revisions of the Tietz Textbook/Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry.
Dr. Ashwood’s research is in fetal maternal laboratory medicine and standardization in clinical chemistry. He has published more than 150 scientific papers, chapters, letters, and abstracts in journals that include Clinical Chemistry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and American Journal of Clinical Pathology. For the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Ashwood has served on the informatics, chemistry, instrumentation, biochemical, and molecular genetics committees. He has been a trustee of the American Board of Pathology since 2014.
