  • Dr. Smock is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah. She completed her residency and fellowship training at the University of Utah and is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology. She is Vice President and Chief Medical Director for the ARUP Laboratories Institute of Clinical and Experimental Pathology (R&D), leading research and development efforts across traditional laboratory medicine, genetics, and oncology and chairing the ARUP R&D Executive Committee.

    Dr. Smock’s primary clinical responsibilities are in coagulation laboratory medicine, and she is a Medical Director of the Hemostasis/Thrombosis Laboratory at ARUP, where she enjoys being involved in all aspects of the laboratory and providing clinical consultation on difficult coagulation cases. She has additional clinical service responsibilities in hematopathology, where she signs out peripheral smears, bone marrow cases and hematology tests.

    Dr. Smock enjoys the educational aspects of academic practice and previously served as the Pathology Residency Program Director at the University of Utah. She has chaired the Clinical Competency Committees for both the residency program and hematopathology fellowship. She received the Department's Outstanding Teaching Award in Clinical Pathology in 2010, 2013, and 2017. She serves on the University of Utah Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society (AOA) Faculty Board of Directors with an emphasis on resident, fellow, and faculty engagement. In 2018, she received the William Roberts Award for Clinical Excellence in Laboratory Medicine, and in 2022, she received the Joseph A. Knight Award for Excellence in Education, from the University of Utah Department of Pathology. In 2016, Dr. Smock was named as an American Society for Clinical Pathology 40 Under Forty honoree, recognizing her as a leader in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

    Dr. Smock is an active member of several professional organizations and is current President of the North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory Association (NASCOLA). She is also current Vice Chair of the College of American Pathologists Hemostasis/Thrombosis Committee and Treasurer of Thrombosis and Hemostasis Societies of North America (THSNA). She is a Summit Co-Chair for the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Societies of North America (THSNA) summits in 2022 and 2024 and a Meeting Co-Chair for the 2023 International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH) annual meeting. She previously represented the Huntsman Cancer Institute for several years on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Clinical Practice Guidelines Panel for Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolic Disease. Dr. Smock serves on the Editorial Boards for Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Seminars in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and International Journal of Laboratory Hematology, and reviews manuscripts for many other scientific journals. She has served as a Guest Editor for Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis for 4 completed or in progress themed issues related to novel analyzers and diagnostic tests in hemostasis and thrombosis. She has many clinical research interests in coagulation medicine and her work includes over 100 journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and other publications in the fields of hemostasis/thrombosis and hematopathology.
