Academic Bio

Dr. Cahalan received his undergraduate degree in chemistry (cum laude) from Harvard University in 1971. He received his Doctor of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha) from Temple University in 1975, completed his internship in internal medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in 1976 and his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in 1978 including serving as a chief resident in his final year. In the following year, he completed a research fellowship with Dr. Edmond (Ted) Eger. In 1979, Dr. Cahalan joined the faculty at UCSF as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1985. In 1985-86, he completed a sabbatical year as a Senior Investigator in the Department of Cardiology at the Thorax Centrum of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands under the direction of Professor Jos R.T. C. Roelandt. In 1986, he became Director of Anesthesia for Cardiac Surgery at UCSF and in 1992 he was promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology. In 2001 he moved to the University of Utah to become Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology, his current position. Dr. Cahalan has authored over 200 publications including abstracts, reviews, chapters and textbooks. He is a co-editor of Clinical Anesthesia, the most widely used textbook in anesthesiology. He helped pioneer the field of perioperative echocardiography and has written and lectured on this topic for nearly 30 years.
