Research Statement

Dr. Johnson completed his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI followed by his residency in pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Following his pediatric training, he completed a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation at the University of Utah. He is currently an Associate Professor in the division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah.

Dr. Johnson´s research interests include improving the care of children with asthma, bronchiolitis and other respiratory conditions. He aims to combine valuable insights from many scientific disciplines so that his own research can advance scientific understanding and have a high impact on the lives of children with respiratory disease. Specific projects include understanding the costs associated with improvements in asthma care in the emergency department and how study of human factors can improve care delivery, improving understanding of the pharmacology of intravenous magnesium sulfate so that it can be better studied in clinical trials to know if it can reduce hospitalization of children with asthma, and to better understand the association of illnesses in infancy with later development of asthma using machine learning methods to understand patterns in large medical data sets.

Dr. Johnson sees patients at Primary Children’s Hospital Emergency Department and Rapid Treatment Unit.
