  • Monika Fleckenstein, MD, specializes in the management and medical treatment of retinal diseases, with a special emphasis on age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Learn more about Dr. Fleckenstein's clinical practice here.

Dr. Fleckenstein joined the John A. Moran Eye Center in 2019 as a Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, with clinical and research appointments. After earning her medical degree at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, Dr. Fleckenstein honed her skills as a research fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University and later completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Bonn, Germany.

    Research

Dr. Fleckenstein's primary research interest centers around degenerative retinal diseases, with a focus on AMD. She specializes in applying advanced high-resolution imaging technology to characterize AMD subtypes, identifying prognostic biomarkers for disease progression, and validating clinical endpoints for interventional trials. These efforts have yielded a substantial body of work, including over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 book chapters.

In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Fleckenstein plays a vital role as a scientific reviewer for esteemed ophthalmology journals and serves on grant review committees for prestigious organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the German Research Foundation.

Dr. Fleckenstein served as the head of the University of Bonn Department of Ophthalmology Clinical Trial Center from 2013 to 2019. At present, Dr. Fleckenstein is actively contributing her expertise to translational research initiatives at the Moran Eye Center's Sharon Eccles Steele Center for Translational Medicine (SCTM). She serves as the principal investigator/multi-principal investigator for two separate NIH grants, each dedicated to clinically characterizing distinct AMD subtypes: "The Impact of Non-Exudative Type 1 Macular Neovascularization on AMD Progression" (R01EY033365) and "Progression of Early Atrophic Lesions in AMD" (R01EY034965).
