    James Sun, MD, is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist with specialized expertise in the treatment of cutaneous malignancies and soft tissue sarcomas, including melanoma, high-risk skin cancers, and complex sarcoma surgery.     Dr. Sun earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in violin performance from Stony Brook University (Stony Brook, NY), graduating cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Downstate Medical School (Brooklyn, NY) and completed early general surgery training at SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn.

    After a research fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, FL), Dr. Sun completed his general surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University / University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (Cleveland, OH). He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center (Philadelphia, PA), where he served as Chief Administrative Fellow.

    Professional Experience and Leadership

    Dr. Sun has an active academic and professional career with a strong focus on surgical oncology education, research, and quality improvement. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific studies, including international collaborations advancing melanoma care, research shaping axillary management in breast cancer, and work establishing quality standards in gastrointestinal oncology.

    He has received multiple awards for teaching, research, and leadership and has served in national committee roles within the Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
