Why Should You Get an Endoscopy?

Through state-of-the-art technology, physicians are able to examine almost any part of the digestive track. Because of this, your doctor may ask you to have an endoscopy to help examine symptoms, diagnose causes, and/or treat your condition.

Examining Symptoms

Symptoms that might cause your doctor to ask for an endoscopy could include any of these:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

Diagnose Causes

Your doctor could also use an endoscopy to help diagnose the problem causing your symptoms. He or she can get a tissue sample during your endoscopy to test (biopsy) for conditions like anemia, bleeding, inflammation, diarrhea, or cancer.

Treatment

Some problems in the digestive system can be treated by using an endoscope to do the following:

  • Burn a blood vessel to stop bleeding
  • Widen a narrow esophagus
  • Remove a blockage
  • Remove a polyp
