Keeping Track of Your Health in a COVID-19 World

Apr 20, 2020

While many of us have concerns about COVID-19 and its impact on our health, life goes on and patients will be taken care of at University of Utah Health hospitals and clinics. Patients with health concerns should continue to contact their prividers, and make appointments by teleconference and in-person when necessary.

"These may be uncertain times, but our commitment to you is unwavering," says Richard Orlandi, MD, chief medical officer for ambulatory health at U of U Health. "Although health care providers may not be able to see you in-person because of the COVID-19 virus, we are absolutely still here to care for you in the safest way possible."

Here is a list of available resources at U of U Health:

Surgical Services

Effective April 29, 2020

University of Utah Health is resuming elective surgeries following a pause in services because of the COVID-19 pandemic. New guidelines for resuming surgical services were developed in cooperation with clinical leaders from Utah's four major health systems. Additionally, guidelines were informed by the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Anesthesiologists, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses and the American Hospital Association.

Patients who had services canceled in March will be contacted by their provider to reschedule procedures. Other patients with surgical needs should contact their provider to discuss options.

Emergency Department and Urgent Care

U of U Health will continue to provide care in urgent situations that demand immediate medical attention. There are two emergency departments located at the main University Hospital and South Jordan Health Center, and nine urgent care locations across the Wasatch front.

Virtual Urgent Care

There are several ways to get a consultation without an in-person meeting. If your conditions aren't life-threatening, opt for a virtual visit with one of our doctors for primary and specialty care.

University Orthopaedic Center Injury Clinic

We understand that injuries in your bones, joints, and muscles can strike at any time. Orthopedic specialists are available to treat sprains, bruises, fractures and dislocations by appointment, Mon-Fri, from 12 pm to 6 pm.

Virtual Prenatal Care

During pregnancy, women need to have regular checkups with doctors to make sure both the baby and mother are healthy. These checkups can be done virtually with a doctor and are best for mothers with low-risk pregnancies.

Hospital Visitor Policy

Following guidelines from the CDC and Utah Department of Health, University of Utah Health is taking aggressive and proactive measures in our hospitals, clinics, and community health centers to better protect patients, visitors, providers, and staff from the potential spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). Read our revised visitor policy here and note that U of U Health will regularly review and update our visitor policy as needed. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

U of U Health is continuing to evaluate the ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases in Utah. Elective surgeries are tentatively postponed until late April, and non-essential visits until May. "It's something we all want," Orlandi says of eventually getting back to normal. "We like seeing our patients."
