A YouTube video created by photographer Thomas Leveritt quickly went viral this month because of its startling look at what the sun does to people’s skin. Leveritt used a specially equipped video camera to film people in ultraviolet, which reveals damage caused by the sun.

The video may make you think twice about not applying sunscreen. After showing the participants their skin in ultraviolet, Leveritt asks them to apply sunscreen. The lotion appears as black paint that blocks the ultraviolet light.

Ultraviolet rays cause changes including wrinkles and age spots, and can also lead to skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., with more than 2 million people diagnosed each year. Sun exposure is the main cause.
