Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) welcomes Gabrielle A. Carlson, MD, DFAACAP, FAPA, as our Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds speaker on December 7, 2022. Her presentation is titled “Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: Where did it come from and what can we do about it?"
Dr. Gabrielle Carlson is a renowned child psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Stony Brook University. She joined the faculty in 1985 and founded the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, which she directed until 2013. She is an expert in the field of childhood psychopathology, specializing in childhood and adolescent depression, bipolar disorder, and irritability. As a researcher, her interests include the phenomenology, long-term follow-up, and treatment of young people with bipolar disorder, as well as the relationship between behavior disorders, like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental disorders, and mood disorders. To date, she has written over 300 papers and chapters on child and adolescent mood disorders.
Dr. Carlson has won numerous honors in the United States, including two awards from the American Psychiatric Association – one for research in child and adolescent psychiatry and one for prevention in child and adolescent psychiatry. She received the American Psychopathological Association Zubin Award for playing a fundamental role in psychopathology research and is especially proud of the Virginia Q. Anthony Outstanding Woman Leader Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Carlson served for four years as Program Chair for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is a recent Past President of the organization. Her presidential initiative focuses on emotion dysregulation in children.
Dr. Carlson received her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College and obtained her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Cornell University Medical College. She did her psychiatry training at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she subsequently taught on the faculty.
