About Total Cancer Care®

At Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, health care providers and researchers seek to know how and why cancer develops and to find ways to better understand, detect, treat, and prevent it.

Together, we want to improve care and quality of life for people affected by cancer and save lives now and in the future.

HCI-Total Cancer Care is a partnership between participants, health care providers, and researchers, aligned with the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) of leading cancer centers.

Who can participate?

You can be in this study if any of these are true:

  • You have been diagnosed with any type of tumor or cancer.
  • Your family has a hereditary condition or strong history of cancer or tumors.
  • You are a volunteer willing to share samples and data for research.

Why should I take part?

It is an opportunity to contribute samples and information that will be used to accelerate cancer research and improve patient care. Participants like you are vital to our success. The study also offers access to a broader set of clinical trials and new treatments through our partnership with other leading cancer centers nationally. There is no cost to be in this study. No matter what you decide, it won’t change the relationship with your health care providers or affect the quality of your care.

How do I participate?

  • You let us have leftover tissue from routine care such as a procedure or a surgery.
  • You may be asked to give additional blood at various times. This is voluntary and we will do our best to draw blood when it is already being done for medical care.
  • You are willing to fill out a questionnaire if asked about your physical and emotional health, family history, and lifestyle.
  • You let us contact you about future research and relevant clinical trials that may interest you.

We invite you to participate in this important research or learn more.

About Total Cancer Care®-Support

We are currently enrolling cancer-free individuals into the Total Cancer Care (TCC)-Support Study. The TCC-Support study is a partnership between you and HCI’s health care providers and researchers. Our goal is to better understand what causes cancer, and to find better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer, by comparing and contrasting differences in individuals without cancer with those that do have cancer.

Who can participate?

  • Men and women between the ages of 18 and 89 who are currently cancer-free

What will I be asked to do?

The study anticipates following participants for approximately two years. You, your family, and/or friends may participate. You’ll have an initial visit with the study coordinator to review the consent. You will have an initial visit with the study coordinator to review procedures and discuss the consent form.

  • Provide samples such as blood, urine, stool, and saliva (most samples are optional)
  • Fill out a questionnaire that asks about your lifestyle, family history, and health
  • Let us collect your waist and hip measurements, a brief assessment of your general fitness, as well as your daily physical activity by having you wear a water-proof device
  • We may ask you for the items at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months after your initial study visit

Will I receive compensation?

Participants will be entered into a raffle for a gift card for each time point completed and may also receive results about their fitness assessment and their physical activity.
