For Cancer Prevention Month, we’re highlighting the 5 behaviors that may prevent up to 50% of cancers.

Exercise helps reduce your cancer risk by helping with weight control. It also may help improve your hormone levels and the way your immune system works. Despite these health benefits, studies show that more than 50 percent of Americans do not engage in enough regular physical activity.

Adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week, spread throughout the week. Limit sedentary behaviors like screen-based entertainment and sitting, and try to build physical activity into your everyday life:

  • Walk the dog. Your pets need exercise too.
  • Go shopping and visit ALL your favorite stores.
  • Jump on the trampoline with your kids.
  • Take a family bike ride.
  • Walk your kids to the bus stop, then walk a little farther.
  • Do stretches, exercises, or pedal a stationary bike while watching television.
  • If you take public transportation, get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way.
  • Replace a coffee break at work with a brisk 10-minute walk.
  • Put down your computer, smart phone, or tablet and go outside.
