Lawrence Marsco, MSN, RN, OCN, has accepted the position of senior director of nursing at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) Cancer Hospital, effective November 1, 2019. In this position, Marsco oversees all hospital inpatient units, social work, the Wellness and Integrative Health Center, nursing education, and house supervisors. He also assists with coordination of other related services at the cancer hospital, including case management, operating rooms, endoscopy, rehab, and others.

Lawrence has served as the interim director of nursing since April 2019. He joined HCI in 2013 as manager of the Huntsman Intensive Care Unit and in 2017 was promoted to director of inpatient nursing operations. Before joining HCI, he worked in various nursing leadership positions at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Center, and San Francisco General Hospital. His extensive clinical background includes critical care and oncology nursing.

“Lawrence is passionate about caring for cancer patients,” says Ben Tanner, MHA, HCI cancer hospital executive director. “We are fortunate to have someone with his commitment and experience to lead our inpatient operations.”

Lawrence says he has focused his leadership and nursing practice on quality, patient safety, and outcomes with values of integrity, compassion, and caring while ensuring an exceptional patient experience.

"I believe that every patient should be cared for with the dignity, compassion, and respect that I would expect for my husband, my children, or my parents,” he says in an article he wrote for Accelerate, University of Utah Health’s online learning community for health care professionals. “When I talk about my passion for patient care and keeping my patients safe, it’s sometimes hard for me to hold back tears. It’s personal.”

Cancer touches all of us.
