Impact: Manni Mohyuddin, MD, multiple myeloma doctor at Huntsman Cancer Institute, describes why groundbreaking research and innovative treatment options should give patients hope.
As a myeloma doctor, I am filled with immense gratitude for the privilege of caring for patients and families facing this disease. This feeling is particularly pronounced during the new year, a time of reflection and gratitude.
"We are truly on the verge of a cure for multiple myeloma"
We are truly on the verge of a cure for multiple myeloma. I believe we are already curing many patients with our current approaches; we just need time to prove it. Every year brings new treatment options that extend and improve lives. I am thankful to work at a place that is at the forefront of researching and utilizing those treatment options. I will emphasize that a cure isn't our only goal. A lot of the work that I am thankful to study and participate in focuses on making life better for our patients right now—sparing those who don't need treatment from unnecessary therapy, finding gentler approaches for patients who cannot tolerate full-intensity treatment, and discovering innovative ways to reduce side effects of our treatments.
"These connections remind me why I love my job so much and fuel my determination"
Every holiday season, I reach out to the families of patients we've lost. We share memories, mutually exchange pictures of children growing up and new adventures taken. Though the list grows longer each year, this ritual fills me with profound gratitude. Even for patients we could not cure, I take solace in knowing we provided comfort, dignity, and precious time together. These connections remind me why I love my job so much and fuel my determination to do better for every patient who comes after.
I wish you all a happy new year, and I am deeply grateful for the trust you place in me. No words can express how grateful I am to be in this position.
