A Message of Gratitude to John Ward, MD

In April of 2019 John Ward, MD became the interim chief clinical officer of HCI and physician-in-chief of the cancer hospital. He willingly accepted this interim position, having no idea how long it would last or that it would include overseeing cancer care during a worldwide pandemic. We recently announced Dr. Sachin Apte as the new chief clinical officer and physician-in-chief. Dr. Ward will continue his service at HCI, including his clinical program caring for breast cancer patients and other key leadership roles.

Pharmacists at HCI do much more than just fill prescriptions. They counsel patients about new treatment regimens and potential side effects. They work with large teams of health care professionals to provide the best patient care. Providing Spiritual Care for HCI Patients and Staff

Small-Town Pride: A Grandma’s Lasting Legacy

I was 16 when I first heard the term downwinder. I didn’t know what it meant, just that my beloved grandma was one. As an adult, I learned it referred to the people who lived down wind of the nuclear testing in Nevada. They had been exposed to high levels of radiation and many were diagnosed with cancer because of it. It meant the small town my grandmother adored and raised her children in was to blame for her cancer diagnosis.

A Tribute to Lacee Harris

Lacee Harris, a spiritual care volunteer at HCI, passed away on August 6, 2020. Born on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Fort Duchesne, Utah, Lacee volunteered spiritual support to patients at HCI for several years. He previously served as the University of Utah’s Indian Education Advisor for 14 years and helped design the current U of U logo. A few HCI team members who knew Lacee remember him with these words.

Everyday Joy

Karen Jensen had a lifelong dream of her dad walking her down the aisle. She was 25, living in Phoenix, about to graduate with a master’s in social work, and about to marry her high school sweetheart. A few weeks before the wedding, her father, who had lymphoma, was emergently admitted to the hospital. Celebrating Ten Years of Hispanic Patient Navigation

This month marks the 10-year anniversary of the Hispanic Patient Navigator program at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Patient navigators serve as a bridge between patients and their care teams. Navigators make sure patients, caregivers, and doctors understand each other and get needed services.

Talks with Docs: Yelena Wu, Melanoma Researcher

Dr. Wu is a pediatric and clinical child psychologist, assistant professor of dermatology, and a member of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Dr. Wu is interested in improving adherence to medical recommendations among adolescents and young adults with cancer and children who are at elevated risk for melanoma.

Talks with Docs: Jason Hunt, Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon

Dr. Hunt completed head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction training at Vanderbilt University after otolaryngology training at Louisiana State University, New Orleans. He has been at the University of Utah since 2006 and primarily sees patients at Huntsman Cancer Institute where he serves as the clinical director of head and neck surgical oncology.
