Huntsman Cancer Institute Names Cornelia Ulrich as Director of its Cancer Research Center

Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah today announced the appointment of Cornelia Ulrich, PhD, MS, as director of its National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. She will oversee HCI’s academic consortium of nearly 200 cancer research teams. Ulrich will lead efforts to advance HCI’s research in laboratory, clinical and population science, with the goal of improving cancer prevention and treatment.

Huntsman Cancer Institute physician-scientist Ahmad Halwani, MD, has been selected by the National Cancer Institute to receive a Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award. This award recognizes physician-scientists for their contributions to clinical cancer research. It also provides financial support for ongoing research and leadership development to enable recipients to further advance their clinical research careers.

Huntsman Cancer Institute Physicians Attend and Share Expertise at National Cancer Meeting

“Delivering Discoveries: Expanding the Reach of Precision Medicine,” was the theme of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2018 annual meeting held June 1-5, 2018 in Chicago. One of the largest scientific conferences in the world, the meeting brings together nearly 40,000 attendees and features thousands of studies about new ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer.

Deborah Stephens, DO, was recently honored with a Huntsman Translational Scholar award. She is the physician leader of Hematology Clinical Trials at Huntsman Cancer Institute and is also an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies at the University of Utah.

Huntsman Cancer Institute First Adult Cancer Hospital in Mountain West to Offer CAR T Cell Therapy to Patients

Huntsman Cancer Institute announced today that it has been certified to offer both chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The therapies are approved for types of aggressive blood cancers, including B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. HCI is one of a few locations nationwide, and the only in the Mountain West, approved to offer these new therapies to adult cancer patients.
