Huntsman Cancer Institute Appoints Kola Okuyemi, MD, MPH, to Lead Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Huntsman Cancer Institute has named Kola Okuyemi, MD, MPH, as executive director of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Okuyemi will oversee efforts at HCI to actively counter racism and promote a culture of belonging, a key strategic priority for the cancer center. This new role expands Okuyemi’s current oversight to include equity, diversity, and inclusion across the full spectrum of the HCI mission.

Pheo Para Alliance Designates Huntsman Cancer Institute as First Center of Excellence

Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah is the first center to receive a Center of Excellence designation from Pheo Para Alliance, a patient advocacy organization dedicated to supporting those with pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, a rare neuroendocrine tumor. Huntsman Cancer Institute serves over 250 pheo and para patients from throughout the Mountain West, including Utah and parts of Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming.

The National Academy of Sciences has elected Mary Beckerle, PhD, Huntsman Cancer Institute CEO, as a member. Beckerle is among 120 newly elected members announced and according to the National Academy, election as a member in this organization is widely accepted as a mark of excellence in scientific achievement and is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive.

The Lucky One - A Social Worker's Story

When I have the opportunity to share that I’m a social worker at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), I often receive admiration. Sometimes, though, people will reply, “I don’t think I could work there,” or “I don’t know how you do that.” I find those responses curious—as does every social worker I’m privileged to work alongside. Because we feel we are the lucky ones.
