PathMaker Program

PathMaker Cancer Research Program

The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is proud to house the PathMaker Cancer Research Program for students with backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical workforce.

Funded by the National Cancer Institute, PathMaker supports the entry of students into the biomedical cancer research pipeline through a blend of summer and academic year research experiences that support the student’s achievement of a career in the biomedical research and the health professions.

The Summer Program consists of a twelve-week summer research experience for exceptionally qualified rising high school seniors or undergraduates. The Academic Year experience is a part-time 2-semester undergraduate research experience and is available on a limited basis. Both experiences allow the student to learn about research, experience research, and reflect on a research career through placement and mentorship with an investigator at HCI. Compensation is provided for both experiences.

Summer students will achieve

  • A two-week intensive laboratory techniques course that meets Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 3:00pm.
  • A ten-week individual research experience on campus, with a University faculty member serving as the research mentor (Schedule TBD with lab; 20 hours/week).

Students who complete the program generally gain a firm foundation for subsequent undergraduate laboratory research experiences.
