The Burt-Neklason lab is focused on studying genes and pathways involved in familial colorectal cancers syndromes.  This includes investigation of the genetics and phenotypes of known inherited syndromes, gene discovery efforts in large Utah pedigrees without known genetic etiology, characterization of genetic and environmental modifiers, and identification of molecular (mRNA) signatures and pathways involved in cancer syndromes.  This is a highly translational lab that works closely with the staff and patients in the High Risk Cancer Research, Familial Cancer Assessment Clinic and Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Registry.  Through better understanding key factors involved in cancer risk and progression, better prevention and treatment approaches can be developed.
