Shawn Nelson, John A. Moran Eye Center Marketing Manager, has been named an official 2014 “Health Care Hero” in Community Outreach by Utah Business magazine.

A Health Care Hero is someone who goes above and beyond to make life easier for patients—someone with a genuine sense of giving back and a knack for bringing a smile to someone who needs it. Nelson personifies that attitude. He has been at the Moran for 14 years and  estimates that between all the vision screenings and eye-health education seminars he has conducted—at Lions Clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs, homeless shelters, and senior centers in the Salt Lake Valley—he’s reached out to about 35,000 people.

“There is nothing more rewarding than to visit with patients about their vision needs and then to have them follow up with me later and tell how I may have saved their eye sight by recommending that they see an eye doctor,” Nelson says.  “One such case took place a couple of years ago when the Moran was doing an eye safety campaign with media coverage and handing out several thousand safety glasses. I personally gave a pair to my neighbor, who was a Delta pilot and was mowing his lawn without eye protection. Well, several weeks later he came over and showed me the major impact star on the safety glasses and couldn’t thank me enough.”

Each year, Utah Business, along with sponsors, MountainStar Health Care and Roseman University, honors a new group of Healthcare Heroes during an awards luncheon. Twenty-four individuals in eight categories will be recognized for outstanding achievement in various facets of healthcare. This year's Health Care Heroes will be featured in the October 2014 issue of Utah Business and celebrated at an event on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center.
