U.S. News & World Report has ranked the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah No. 13 in the nation for providing excellent patient care.

The ranking, released as part of the magazine’s annual Best Hospitals for Ophthalmology report, is based on voting results asking ophthalmologists across the nation where they would send patients with the most complex eye conditions.

“I’m delighted our peers across the country realize the exceptional care the Moran Eye Center offers,” said Moran CEO and Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Professor and Chair Randall J Olson, MD. “Among patients, the Moran Eye Center may be one of the best-kept eye care secrets in the country, so I couldn’t be more pleased the word is out with this new ranking.”

In Salt Lake City, patients can experience the highest level of both routine and specialized eye care in state-of-the-art facilities

“Many of our physicians are world-renowned for their subspecialty care in areas such as retinal disease,” Olson said. “This ranking acknowledges those who need our help the most are experiencing impressive results at the Moran Eye Center. We combine top-notch faculty with groundbreaking research to develop new therapies and to improve our care, and that really makes all the difference.”

U.S. News & World Report says its Best Hospitals report aims to help patients make crucially important health care decisions. For ophthalmology, the magazine only publishes rankings for institutions that receive at least five percent of votes from ophthalmologists responding over three years.

The ranking is the latest in a string of recognitions for the Moran Eye Center. In 2019, Ophthalmology Times magazine ranked Moran No. 8 in the country for having the best overall program following a national poll of ophthalmology department chairs. Doximity.com has also ranked Moran’s educational program at No. 9 in the nation.

About Moran's Nationally Ranked Eye Care

As part of University of Utah Health, the Moran Eye Center serves as the largest ophthalmology clinical care and research center in the Mountain West with more than 60 faculty members and 10 satellite clinics. Physicians offer care in nearly all ophthalmic subspecialties, making Moran a major referral center for complex cases with over 145,000 patient visits and about 7,000 surgeries annually.

Moran supports 15 research labs, where internationally-awarded faculty, including one of the world’s top retinal teams, are developing the treatments of tomorrow. Faculty train 12 residents, four interns, and up to 13 fellows each year in one of the nation’s most selective and unique academic programs.

More than 500 employees work to achieve the Moran Eye Center’s vision that no person with a blinding condition, eye disease, or visual impairment should be without hope, understanding, and treatment. Funded by donors, the Moran Eye Center Global Outreach Division carries out this vision on a local and global scale by providing services to underserved Utahns at no cost and by training doctors in developing countries to sustainably expand access to care.
