This collaboration marks a major milestone in the university's long-term vision, securing the land for a proposed health campus that will not only serve as the health care anchor for the 600-acre master-planned development but will also provide greater access to residents throughout Salt Lake and Utah Counties.
Formed by the Utah State Legislature in 2018, the Point of the Mountain State Land Authority oversees the transformation of this major state-owned property near the Salt Lake-Utah County line. By securing a permanent 46-acre footprint, U of U Health establishes the foundation required to plan a future health campus, which could include access to both inpatient and outpatient services, tailored to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population.
As one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, the Point of the Mountain corridor requires proactive infrastructure. This strategic land acquisition will allow U of U Health to bring its nationally ranked, research-driven clinical care directly to residents in Draper, Bluffdale, Lehi, South Jordan, Sandy, Riverton, Herriman, American Fork, Highland/Alpine, Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mountain, and surrounding areas. The project aligns with the broader university strategic vision, weaving top-tier clinical care into a growing future hub for housing, jobs, and innovation.

“This landmark project at The Point does not change our commitments to the University of Utah Eccles Health Campus & Eccles Hospital in West Valley and the Huntsman Cancer Institute Comprehensive Care Center in Vineyard,” Carter said. “Together, these are complementary efforts that reflect our broader strategy for meeting the evolving health needs of our state and region.”
While design, sizing, and structural details for a proposed health campus remain in the early conceptual phases, the overarching development at The Point is projected to be a significant economic catalyst. The state's $165 million investment in backbone infrastructure has unlocked $2.3 billion in private capital investment in Phase I alone. By 2048, The Point is expected to generate more than $7 billion in GDP, create over 46,000 jobs, and drive $4.4 billion in annual earnings. When fully operational, U of U Health alone expects to employ approximately 2,500 clinical and non-clinical staff members at the site.
