What to Expect at Your Primary Care Appointment

Before Your Visit

Come Prepared

Make sure you have all necessary paperwork and information ready:

  • Photo ID

  • Insurance card

  • Your personal history (if possible, make sure we have your previous medical records)

  • A list of your current medications, including over-the-counter and vitamins

  • Your family medical history

Arrive on Time

Plan ahead. It may take extra time to find parking. You should arrive at least 10 minutes early to help us stay on schedule. If you're more than 15 minutes late, we may need to reschedule your visit to offer enough time for your care.

How Will We Spend the Time?

Your First Visit

We'll check your vitals, get to know you, review your health history, and may perform lab tests.

Annual Wellness Visit

We'll talk about your health goals and recommend screenings and tests. We'll also offer advice for healthy living and may provide immunizations (shots).

Follow-up Visits

We can talk about a new health concern or an ongoing issue. This may involve lab tests, referrals, or changes to medications.

Need an Interpreter?

We offer free interpreter services. Family members are welcome but should not interpret during your visit.

An annual wellness visit allows your provider to learn about your current health. Your visit will start with a member of our staff taking some measurements:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Height and weight
  • Temperature

Your provider usually listens to your heart and lungs. You will discuss your health goals and concerns. Your visit might include mention of preventive screenings, vaccines, and tests you might need, like cholesterol and lipid levels.

You should expect to answer a few questions during your visit:

  • Are you up to date on your vaccinations and immunizations?
  • Does your family have a history of any chronic conditions or diseases?
  • How are you sleeping?
  • How often do you use sunscreen?
  • How physically active are you?
  • What are you doing to keep yourself healthy?
  • What does your typical diet look like?
  • What medications and supplements are you currently taking?
  • When was the last time you went to the dentist?
  • When were you last screened for cancer or other diseases?

Your answers and the exam’s results give your provider a baseline for your health. They use the information in future visits to track your progress and improve your health. Your PCP will schedule screening tests based on your age, sex, family history, and risk factors.
