Kensaku Kawamoto, MD, PhD, MHS, Chief Medical Information Officer of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah Health, will co-chair the U.S. Interoperability Standard Priorities Task Force. Members of the Task Force will make recommendations on ways to prioritize the use of health information technology in accordance with the 21st Century Cures Act.

The Task Force is comprised of members from health system and government organizations, as well as industry. The group will work to identify areas where information technology could be leveraged to improve health and health care, as well as provide recommendations to overcome barriers to achieve these goals.

In 2017, Kawamoto was appointed to a 3-year term on the U.S. Health Information TechnologyAdvisory Committee. The Committee provides recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology on the health information technologyinfrastructure required to enhance health and health care in the United States.

“Every patient deserves to receive the best care possible, and we need information systems that are fine-tuned and optimized to help accomplish this goal,” said Kawamoto. “I am hopeful this task force will have some influence on advancing health IT on a national level.”
