At 9:43 a.m. on November 5th, a vehicle struck the University of Utah Health COVID-19 testing site at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus. One testing booth was destroyed and nine people were injured. The Salt Lake City Fire Department, University of Utah Police, and University of Utah Health Emergency Management immediately responded and secured the scene. Five people were treated and released on scene and four people were transported to University Hospital. No serious injuries have been reported. At this time, it's believed that the driver of the vehicle experienced a medical emergency, however the investigation is still ongoing to determine a cause.
COVID-19 testing at Rice-Eccles Stadium is temporarily closed. Patients who have an appointment to get tested at this site will be contacted and rescheduled. COVID-19 testing is currently available at Farmington, Redwood, South Jordan, and Redstone health centers. Those who need to get tested for COVID-19 can find available times and locations on U of U Health's coronavirus website.
University of Utah Health would like to thank Layton Construction for responding to the incident. Without asking, dozens of workers who were on scene at the Rice-Eccles Stadium construction site immediately assisted our staff and helped safely dissemble the site. We are truly grateful for their assistance.
