The University of Utah School of Medicines residency program in diagnostic radiology has been rated No. 1 among 190 programs in the United States and Canada for the five-year period 2000-2004, according to the latest rankings by the American Board of Radiology.

Overall, this is the seventh straight year the Us radiology program has held or been tied for the top spot.

E.A. "Steve" Stevens, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Radiology, credits the programs accomplishment to concentrating on the basics--education, research, and patient care--as well as having "good people."

"We have faculty who really enjoy teaching, some of the best imaging equipment in the country, and residents who really want to learn," Stevens said.

Some remarkable numbers bear out the quality of the Us radiology residency: Upward of 400 medical school graduates applied for just five spots in the program this year, and in the past five years 100 percent of the programs graduates have passed the written and oral exams for certification on the first try.

The radiology faculty includes 25 physicians and eight researchers who hold Ph.D. degrees. Along with being the top residency program, the U radiology department also ranks among the best in research and is one of the top 20 in National Institutes of Health peer-reviewed grants.
