University Health Care Connects Women to Wellness with May 15 Health Fair

Apr 21, 2008 9:00 AM

Women of all ages are invited to attend the Women’s Health Fair on Thursday, May 15 at University Health Care’s Madsen Health Center, 555 S. Foothill Blvd. The free event, sponsored by the Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at the University of Utah, will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

According to Kathleen Digre, M.D., director of the U’s Center of Excellence in Women’s Health and professor of neurology and ophthalmology, the health fair is an opportunity to educate women on some key health issues and teach them simple steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and prevent disease.

Women in Utah continue to rank near the bottom of the country in receiving regular preventive health care in key areas such as cholesterol screening, mammograms, pap smears, and routine checkups as well as prenatal care.

Attendees can visit 13 rooms, each devoted to a different health issue, and obtain information on that topic, a list of resources for getting help or treatment in that area, and a screening tool to assist with knowing if one is at risk and should seek further advice. Each room will be staffed by a University Health Care physician, nutritionist, physical therapist, nurse or other specialist who can answer questions. The topics include

• bone health
• mental health
• heart health
• reproductive endocrinology
• contraception options
• obstetrics and gynecology
• headache
• physical activity
• nutrition
• aesthetics
• Hormone Replacement Therapy/menopause
• massage therapy
• adolescent health (including the HPV vaccine)

In addition, representatives from the Utah Department of Health and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library will be on hand. Attendees can learn about Utahhealthnet, an online resource for finding health information throughout the state.

The Women’s Health Fair is being held in conjunction with National Women’s Health Week, May 11-17. The Health Fair is free and open to women of all ages. For more information, please contact the U’s Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at (801) 585-9971.
