Press Ganey Associates, Inc, has named University of Utah Health Care’s Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) a 2011 Success Story Award® winner. Press Ganey currently partners with more than 10,000 health care facilities — including 50percent of all U.S. hospitals — to measure and improve the quality of care that providers deliver to patients and, ultimately, to improve the overall health care experience.

The Success Story Award recognizes facilities that have demonstrated leadership, implemented organizational change, and improved performance. The award is a highly regarded symbol of achievement in the health care industry. It is awarded annually, and UNI is one of nine organizations to receive this honor in 2011. It is one of six organizations to receive the award for patient satisfaction performance.

Robert Draughon, Press Ganey’s CEO noted, "We are proud to partner with UNI. UNI’s innovative approach to improving patient satisfaction helps to advance the quality of health care in Utah.”

As a psychiatric hospital, patients come to UNI for very complex reasons including some who are there involuntarily. “To receive a patient satisfaction award is a testament to the hard work of our entire staff,” says Ross VanVranken, UNI executive director. “We made a commitment to offering our patients the highest quality of care and the best experience possible, and I think this award validates our efforts.”

UNI has been working toward this goal for many years. The majority of UNI physicians consistently rank above the 99th

percentile in patient satisfaction surveys and patient comments are posted for all physicians to see. “This ensures both personal and public accountability among peers,” says VanVranken.Other aspects of the patient satisfaction goals include careful screening of new employees, and an effort where each staff member is asked to think of one small way he or she can make a difference for patients.
