(SALT LAKE CITY)—The chair of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine and the chief counsel for University of Utah Hospital have accepted senior leadership positions on the staff of U of U Senior Vice President for Health Sciences Vivian S. Lee, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A.

Sean J. Mulvihill, M.D., professor and chair of surgery at the School of Medicine and senior director of clinical affairs at the U of U’s Huntsman Cancer Institute, has accepted the position of health sciences associate vice president for clinical affairs and chief executive officer for the University of Utah Medical Group. Mulvihill’s new responsibilities will include overseeing the clinical enterprise and operations in the School of Medicine, collaborating with Lee and David Entwistle, CEO, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, to develop and implement a strategic plan for the health care organization; and leading development of innovations for health care delivery.

Mulvihill will continue his surgical practice in the gastrointestinal cancers program and his research to understand the biology of cancer of the pancreas. “Dr. Mulvihill’s outstanding leadership and collaborative, patient-centered focus, will be extremely important in his new position,” Lee said. “I am confident of his ability to bring our clinical enterprise to new heights.”

Former U of U Hospital chief counsel Liz Winter started as Lee’s chief of staff on April 1. In her new role, she serves as an active member of the executive leadership team, with a variety of responsibilities, including: managing leadership, administrative, and department chair’s meeting agendas; monitoring and moving forward top priority projects; working in college dean and department chair relations; acting as a liaison with legal counsel; and supporting the Lee in major external relations.

In addition to serving as the hospital chief counsel, Winter also held the post of deputy general counsel for the University of Utah. “I know Liz will bring her thoughtful analysis and creative problem-solving to this important new position,” Lee said.
