HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY SPINE SECOND OPINION REPORT?

You will receive an email notification once your second opinion has been completed, which can be accessed using the Spine Second Opinion account you created. The report will be formatted as a PDF and will include a statement from our physician explaining his conclusion and what treatment options are available to you.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

You are eligible to use the University of Utah Health’s Spine Second Opinion Program if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have been recently diagnosed with one of the following spine diseases diseases:
    • Spinal disorder,
    • Herniated disc,
    • Spinal stenosis,
    • Spondylosis,
    • Spine tumor,
    • Spinal cord tumor,
    • Spinal deformity,
    • Spinal cord compression, or
    • Nerve root compression.
  • You have diagnostic images taken within the past 30 days that clearly show the disease or pathology in question.
  • You have already seen and been diagnosed by a physician as having one of the conditions above. Your diagnostic images are accessible on a CD or other digital storage device and ready to upload.

WHAT KINDS OF DIAGNOSTIC IMAGES ARE ACCEPTABLE?

We accept X-rays, MRI, and CT scans for diagnostic purposes.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO PARTICIPATE?

You must be at least 18 years old to request a spine second opinion.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE?

We will have your completed spine second opinion to you within seven business days from the receipt of your diagnostic images and radiologist’s report. Only applications containing both the request form and diagnostic images will be considered.

DOES MY DOCTOR NEED TO BE INVOLVED?

You do not need to have your doctor submit your second opinion question on your behalf. However, you may want to consult with a neurologist, neurosurgeon, orthopaedic spine surgeon, or family physician in your area if you have trouble understanding or interpreting our treatment recommendation.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

University of Utah Health charges a $25 fee, payable by major credit card, for each second opinion request. We do not offer any other payment option other than credit card for online second opinions.

IS IT COVERED BY MY INSURANCE?

Please consult your individual policy guidelines or insurance company to see if second opinion services are covered. University of Utah Health does not bill your insurance company directly for second opinions. You will need to submit a request for reimbursement to your insurance company if applicable.
