Interview

Announcer: The Health Minute, produced by University of Utah Health.

Interviewer: Preventing hair loss, Dermatologist Dr. David Smart, is there anything I can do, or if I'm going to lose it, am I just going to lose it?

Dr. Smart: Well, that's a very good question. Now, there are a few things that you can do to keep what you've got. Like anything else, diet and exercise are helpful. And two other things that are scientifically proven to improve scalp health and hair growth and thickness are anti-dandruff shampoo and Rogaine.

Interviewer: All right, so if I notice that I'm starting to lose my hair, what do I do at that point?

Dr. Smart: Well, if you notice that you're starting to lose your hair prematurely, then you are normal. Eighty percent of men do experience hair loss, male pattern baldness, at some point in time over their lives, some sooner than others. If you're noticing it, see your dermatologist. You can talk about medications, and even procedures, that sometimes can make very remarkable differences.
