Physician Consultation Program

Physician Consultation Program

The Gate Program is a novel, web-based consultation model aimed at extending mental health services to children and adults through patient-centered consultations between primary care physicians and psychiatric specialists.

Program Goals

Our goals are to improve access to mental health services for children and adults, improve collaboration between primary care physicians and mental health professionals, and enhance knowledge of how to manage mental health conditions in the primary care setting. As opposed to the traditional psychiatric clinic, we believe we can influence the greatest number of people with the GATE Utah system by providing high quality care to families and children, while at the same time lowering costs and maintaining the majority of the treatment in the medical home.

About Us

GATE was founded by a group of physicians in the Division of Child Psychiatry at the University of Utah who envision developing a better system for mental health care delivery. Current child psychiatrists involved are Jim Ashworth, MD, Jeremy Kendrick, MD, Kristi Kleinschmit, MD, and Rachel Weir, MD.

In different ways, each of us has witnessed the problems with poor access to mental health specialists and the unfortunate division that exists between medical and mental health treatment. There is growing evidence that treatment of mental health disorders in the primary care setting is associated with improved overall health outcomes, and the potential for cost savings. Unfortunately, implementation of mental health integration projects nationwide has been moving slowly.

For years, we have heard frustration from primary care physicians about the lack of access to mental health specialists, and poor communication and follow through when patients are finally seen. We are also aware that training on mental health issues during primary care residencies is variable and on the job experience is how most primary care physicians obtain knowledge on treating mental health disorders, usually with very little outside help from psychiatrists.

Our Motto: Giving Access To Everyone

Contracting with GATE

We are excited to be expanding GATE to new providers. We currently are working with providers who are involved with one of our partner organizations which include the University of Utah, ARUP, and University of Utah Health Plans. We are always interested in discussing possible collaborations so feel free to contact us if you have questions. Our email is gateutah@gmail.com.

Currently peer to peer consultations are not covered by most insurers, but per consult payment options are available.

If you are interested in advocating for use of GATE with the major insurers you work with, we have attached a sample letter to be sent to insurers describing the program and how it is of value to providers and patients.
