Bio

Clinical Activities: Forty percent of my time is devoted to direct clinical care of patients. I have an outpatient practice wherein I focus primarily on treatment refractory mood and anxiety disorders. With this limited practice effort,, I have given priority to serving my faculty colleagues with their needs for psychiatric consultation. I also give priority to service with our University families.

With my colleague Steven Ross, Ph.D., I do special evaluations for the Federal Aviation Administration concerning airworthiness of commercial pilots who have had problems with substance abuse.

For some time I have provided psychiatric evaluations and care plans to primary care colleagues in under served areas in the Intermountain region.

As an extension of my service to thw Risk Management Committee of University Health Care I also provide consultation, clinical suport for our colleagues who receive notice that a complaint or law suit has been filed regarding care they have provided.

Academic Bio

Teaching; For the past 2 decades, Dr. Schmidt has directed the Core Seminar in Psychiatry for PGY I & II Residents in Psychiatry. This weekly gathering of early career psychiatric residents meet weekly through out the academic year. This seminar includes an eight week summer session that provides an Introduction to Public Psychiatry taught with Meredith Alden, MD. This involves presentations and discussions that might best be described as a skeletal system for Psychiatry. Dr. Schmidt provides supervision for residents in their inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations. He also provides case consultation and assistance with formulation for residents and Jr. faculty. He particularly enjoys offering career advising for our senior psychiatry residents.

Scholarly Activity: In 2002, Dr. Schmidt was invited to provide medical editorial direction for a book on panic phenomena. This resulted in an anthology to which he also contributed the Editors introduction. Schmidt, Leonard J. & Warner, Brooke (eds.): Panic: Origins, Insight, and Treatment. Berkeley, CA; North Atlantic Books, 2002.

A project with colleague Dr. Daniel D. Christensen and two Swedish neurosurgeons (Dr. Laitenen and Hariz) on a sterotactic approach to the treatment of refractory obsessive compulsive disorder was published was published in 2003. Christensen DD, Laitenen LV, Schmidt LJ & Hariz MI: Anterior capsulotomy for treatment of refractory obsessive compulsive disorder: Results in a young and an old patient. Stereotactic Functional Neurosurgery 79, No. 3-4: 234 - 244, 2002 (released August 2003) Their collaboration continues with Dan Christensen, MD and London colleague, Marwan Hariz, MD, neurosurgeon, who have assembled 10 year follow-up data on the anterior capsulotomy cases. Alexis Racine, MD has surveyed each patient using an outcomes protocol we developed. They expect to submit a draft of the paper shortly for editorial review..
