Academic Bio

Stephen C. Hartsell, M.D. is the director of education for the University of Utah Division of Emergency Medicine and an Associate Professor of Surgery (Emergency Medicine). Dr. Hartsell received his Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after which he spent two years touring with a rhythm and blues band along the East Coast. He returned to Chapel Hill to attend Medical School and graduated in 1982. His residency training in emergency medicine was completed at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Hartsell has been on faculty at the University of Utah since 1986 and served as Medical Director for the University of Utah's AirMed transport system from 1992 -1998. He is a founding member of the Air Medical Physician Association and an active member of the American College of Emergency Medicine where he has served as a Councilor since 1996 and as President of the Utah Chapter of ACEP from 1997-1999. Dr. Hartsell has served as director for several wilderness medicine CME conferences and most recently as been a co-director for the Western States Winter Conference on Emergency Medicine. His research interests include trauma care, EMS and emergency medical education. Dr. Hartsell enjoys his mountain bike tours into Yellowstone and the Tetons with his daughter, Sydney. As often as possible (but not often enough) you will find him with his pack full of painting and fly-fishing gear heading into the wilderness of the Wind River Mountain Range of Wyoming looking for beautiful vistas, enlightenment and trout.
