Academic Bio

I am Professor of Pathology (Clinical) and specialize in hematopathology, including the morphologic, immunohistochemical and flow cytometric immunophenotyping of leukemias, lymphomas and other obnormalities of the hematolymphoid system. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, this includes participating in the training of medical students, residents and fellows, including those in Pathology and in Hematology/Oncology. I also have interest and experience in laboratory management principles and practices, as well as in health policy issues such as Medicare payment policy and FDA regulation of laboratory developed tests. I was a member of the management team at the University's ARUP Laboratories for 24 years, including 10 years as Chief Medical Officer and Director of Laboratories, and 6 years as President and Chief Operating Officer. I have been involved in committee assignments and leadership roles for several national organizations in pathology and laboratory medicine, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Pathology Foundation (APF) and the American Clinical Laboratory Association (ACLA). These assignments included President of the APF and two terms as Chairman of the Board of the ACLA. In addition to my responsiblities in Pathology, I also work part time in the University's Office of Technology Venture Development, where I have served as Director of Faculty Outreach and a member of the executive committe of the Entrepreneurial Faculty Scholars program.
