Bio

Dr. Vernon received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, completed his Pediatric residency at Oregon Health Sciences University, and his Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He was on the faculty of the University of Miami before joining the University of Utah in 1987. Dr. Vernon is board-certified in Pediatrics Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

He is currently a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah, in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. He is a full-time clinician in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Primary Children’s Medical Center. His specific clinical interests include pediatric cardiac intensive care. As Associate Department Chair for Quality, Dr. Vernon is also interested in quality improvement and monitoring primarily related to processes and systems of care.

Academic Bio

Dr. Vernon’s research interests in the past have spanned a variety of areas including animal models of intoxication, pharmacology of catecholamines and other drugs, injury and injury control, trauma systems, emergency medical systems, as well as a variety of clinical observations. He has been an investigator or co-investigator on 8 research grants and projects. Dr. Vernon has published 44 peer-reviewed scientific papers, as well as 8 invited reviews and editorials, 4 research reports, and 16 book chapters. His current research interests and activities mainly involve emergency medical systems for children. Additionally, in his role as Associate Chair for Quality of the Department of Pediatrics, he maintains an interest in quality improvement as related to systems and processes of medical care.

Dr. Vernon in the past has served on the Subboard for Critical Care Medicine of the American Board of Pediatrics, including two years as Chair, and currently serves on the National Board of Medical Examiners.
