Dr. Vinik is Chief Medical Utilization Officer at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clincs. He began working as a full time Hospitalist in the Division of General Internal Medicine in 2002. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas Austin. He subsequently went to medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. His internship in Internal Medicine was done at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Yale-Greenwich Hospital in 2002. His academic interests are improving care in perioperative medical management, anticoagulation management, and diabetes management in hospitalized patientss. Since 2011, Dr Vinik has increased his administrative role as medical director with Health Information, Coding, Utilization Revies, and Case management. His other interests outside of medicine include biking, sailing and skiing.

Academic Bio

Dr. Vinik is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine the University of Utah. After completing his medical school training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1999 and Internal Medicine residency at Yale, Greenwich Hospital in 2002, he began his career as a full-time Hospitalist where he serves as Associate Professor and member of the General Medicine Hospitalist Program at the University of Utah Medical Center. In this capacity he cares for inpatients at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. He has been a leader in the hospital medicine group and is active in projects to improve the quality of patient care at the University Hospital.

In addition to being a Hospitalist, his other academic pursuits include education and research related to inpatient diabetes care and anticoagulation management. He has been site principal investigator for two NIH funded clinical trials and co-investigator in several other trials.. He is a part of the University of Utah Thrombosis Service, a large multidisciplinary service committed to advancing patient care through innovative management approaches, providing patient consultation, research, and educational activities to both patients and healthcare providers.
