with National Transplant Awards;
Only Utah hospital in prestigious ranking
(SALT LAKE CITY)— The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded University of Utah Hospital with three major awards for its success in organ transplant.
The organization named University Hospital a Medal of Honor Silver Award winner for its leadership in increasing the number of people who enroll as future donors. The hospital also received the Bronze Transplant Program Award for its kidney and heart transplant programs. This award recognizes programs that achieve better than expected performance on post transplant survival rates, transplant rates, and pre-transplant mortality rates. University Hospital is the only Utah hospital to achieve an award in the heart transplant category.
“These awards are a recognition of the great teamwork that goes into our transplant program,” says Craig Selzman, M.D., associate professor of surgery in the U of U School of Medicine and director of the Heart Transplant and Cardiac Mechanical Assist programs. “As one of only 20 or so heart transplant programs recognized in the country - and the only one in the region - it is a real testament to our mission of combining world-class outcomes and exceptional patient experiences with leading-edge research fueled by the great expertise and passion from our staff.”
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) at HHS supports the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which brings together donation and transplantation professionals, hospital staff, and other professionals involved in the donation process to identify and share best practices.
“I applaud these award winners for bringing the ‘gift of life’ to so many,” said HHS assistant secretary for health Howard K. Koh, M.D., M.P.H. "Their tireless efforts to make improvements in the donation and transplantation field will continue to help save lives."
