For 14 consecutive years, Vizient, Inc. has ranked University of Utah Health in the top 10 of participating comprehensive academic medical centers nationwide in the 2023 Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking. U of U Health achieved the No. 1 ranking in the nation in 2020, 2016, and 2010.
The Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award recognizes academic medical centers for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study measures superior performance based on the Institute of Medicine’s six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and patient centeredness.
In addition to its placement on the top 10 list, U of U Health also ranked 2nd nationally in Vizient’s Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Awards. This is the eighth year in a row that U of U Health has ranked in the top ten nationally for its ambulatory quality of care. The Vizient Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award measures the quality of outpatient care in five domains: access to care, capacity and throughput, quality and efficiency, continuum of care, and equity.
Why Quality Matters To Us: Patients
This honor is a win for every member of our dedicated team across the system. But even more importantly, it's a win for our patients.
How Does the Quality & Accountability Study Work?
The Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking is one of the most rigorous available. Participating hospitals were segmented into four cohorts. The ranking measured performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness, and equity. The ranking factors in measures from the Vizient Clinical Data Base and includes performance in core measures data, the HCAHPS survey and the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.
The Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers and identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care activity. The recognition period is for work spanning July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023.

How are various health care quality rankings different?
- Based on actual care delivery—not reputation
