Dr. Kirtly Jones: Today on The Scope New Year's Resolutions, what's yours and where's it going.

Dr. Kirtly Jones: Today on The Scope we're going to talk about New Year's resolutions, what kind of resolutions do women make and we're going to be talking to some women here in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
First we're going to talk to Kate.
Kate: Last year my resolution was to lose some weight. I had had a major surgery and was thinking it would be a good time to get healthy. So it went well; I lost 30 pounds total. I think mostly in part that after having this surgery it kind of gives you some encouragement or maybe a wake-up call to get in better shape.
Dr. Kirtly Jones: So this is your New Year's resolution. What are your motivating factors and who are your helpers. Clearly Kate was successful because she had some big motivating factors. If you're not having something that's serious and you don't have someone to help you, then you're not so likely to succeed. Are you going to tell anybody?
For years I never told anybody my New Year's resolutions because always the same; I was going to exercise more and lose weight, but I didn't want to tell anybody because they might hold me to it. Well, that's what you want. You want someone to hold you to it. So get a New Year's resolution partner and tell them and you're more likely to succeed.
Next we're going to talk to Ronalee.
Ronalee: So this year I have quite a few resolutions. One that is very important that I made, to pay off my credit card and [inaudible 00:01:40]. And as soon as I do that I am going to buy me a new car.
Dr. Kirtly Jones: Financial health is an important part of women's overall sense of wellness because when you're worried about your debts and you're worried about your ability to pay your bills, worry keeps you from sleeping well and when you don't sleep well you get irritable. When you don't sleep well your immune system isn't so good. When you don't sleep well and you're nervous your blood pressure goes up.
Financial health is a big part of the domains of health; getting out of debt, not using your credit card until you're debt free. Do you have a way of paying it off little bit by little bit? With any step I usually want to lose 50 pounds in four months, so that's totally unrealistic. If you want to pay off your credit card debts of thousands of dollars in two months, that's not realistic either. So make a realistic goal, not just a goal that you want to get, but make it in little bits that you can stick to and that's realistic.
Next we're going to go to Chelsea.
Chelsea: I just don't have or ever have New Year's resolutions. I think a couple years ago I had a New Year's resolution to stay fit, but I don't think I ever followed through with it.
Dr. Kirtly Jones: So Chelsea doesn't make resolutions. She's young and perfect and smart and thin and fit, but even she said that when she does think about doing something it has to do with eating right and exercising more.
Find an exercise program that works for you, if exercise is part of it, and realize that exercise may just be getting out of your chair. So you don't have to go outside and run a mile. You can just think about the cleaning that you want to do, you can dance and boogie while you clean. Get yourself some good music and boogie. Think about walking around the house or reorganizing your closet, all that counts as movement. The biggest thing for many of us is just getting out of the chair.
Lastly we're going to talk to Renee.
Renee: Well since my birthday is actually on January 1st, and that means for the word "Renee" reborn, it's always a time of reflection and starting a New Year, new goals, new starts, new behavior, new attitudes. And so I am looking forward to a fantastic 2014, lots of travel, exercise, good food, new friends, old friends, and just take it from there.
Dr. Kirtly Jones: New Years is about rebirth. And it is an opportunity to be thoughtful and mindful of who you are and who you want to be. I think that Renee's goals are ideal because she puts in things that she loves to do like travel, but she also puts in things like family.
So I think New Year's resolutions should be made in a hopeful spirit and a gentle spirit with you self; not full of self disgust or frustration or anger, but a gentle spirit, achievable goals, and tell somebody and here's the best to you all for a healthy and happy New Year for you, your family, and our little green planet.
